Photos tell the stories — stories we’re inspired to relive, share with our friends, or capture simply to express ourselves. Collecting these moments is a part of our everyday. Since 2005, Flickr has become synonymous with inspiring imagery. Today, we’re thrilled…

Researchers Build Complex 3D Nano Structures Out of DNA By Manipulating How Strands Join

“We were amazed that it worked!” said Yan. “Once we saw that it actually worked, it was relatively easy to implement new designs. Now it seems easy in hindsight. If your mindset is limited by the conventional rules, it’s really hard to take the next step. Once you take that step, it becomes so obvious.”

The DNA Gridiron designs are programmed into a viral DNA, where a spaghetti-shaped single strand of DNA is spit out and folded together with the help of small ‘staple’ strands of DNA that help mold the final DNA structure. In a test tube, the mixture is heated, then rapidly cooled, and everything self-assembles and molds into the final shape once cooled.

Next, using sophisticated AFM and TEM imaging technology, they are able to examine the shapes and sizes of the final products and determine that they had formed correctly.

This approach has allowed them to build multilayered, 3-D structures and curved objects for new applications. “Most of our research team is now devoted toward finding new applications for this basic toolkit we are making,” said Yan. “There is still a long way to go and a lot of new ideas to explore. We just need to keep talking to biologists, physicists and engineers to understand and meet their needs.”

(via DNA made into Complex 2D and 3D DNA nanostructures made from DNA wireframe meshes using new adaptable junctions)

7 Little-Known Tech Tools Teachers Should Try...

techedblog:

7 Little-Known Tech Tools Teachers Should Try Out

There are hundreds of thousands of apps, tools, and websites that teachers could learn from. But, well, teachers don’t have that kinda time. In fact, the lack of time is a big issue when it comes to education technology integration. Handing off an iPad to a teacher and saying ‘there now you have an iPad, go revolutionize learning!’ is how most districts still approach integration.

So in an effort to boil down the most effective (even if they’re not the most popular) education technology tools, many people like myself test out and recommend just a small fraction of the many offerings out there. A terrific blogger I follow, Jacqui Murray, did just that when she recommended 7 tech tools that educators should be using. (That article is great, check it out.)

Since we’ve established that teachers are short on time but not on resources, these kind of articles are great for a connected educator on the go. But you know what’s even better? A useful blog post turned into a video! Who doesn’t love that? That video is embedded above and worth a quick watch and courtesy of the fine folks at TeachHub.

Most of the tools are not very well-known or at least not overly used and talked about. If you use them, how have your experiences been? Any other tools you’d recommend be added to this list?

The List

With this in mind, the Hail Protector is an air-filled cover that can protect cars from the destructive force of falling ice lumps, with a tie-in app to alert drivers of weather changes. READ MORE…

Aereo is trying to make live TV available over the Internet and yesterday the company got a step closer. The United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals declined a request by some of the country’s largest television networks to issue a preliminary injunction against Aereo, which would have closed the service down. The broadcasters allege that Aereo violates their copyrights by distributing their shows without compensating them. Aereo says all it is doing is helping people watch freely available over-the-air broadcasts online, which they have a right to do. At stake is nothing less than control of the airwaves. To this point, it’s been a complicated story and there’s still more debate to come. Now is a good time to try to figure out what this might mean for you.

[Innovation for 2013] Flexible mobile phones will be released: Flexible glass makes such developments possible. Medical professionals will love these as they are literally unbreakable. The PC era is clearly over.

Watch this cool video about the 3D photo booth! No more boring and awkward family pictures, OMOTE 3D SASHIN KAN in Japan makes real 3D miniatures of you (and your family).

This is how it works in 3 steps:

First, the subject’s body is scanned into a computer using a handheld 3D scanner. The person must remain motionless for up to 15 minutes during this step.

Next, a 3D model of the subject is generated using the scan data. Since the data isn’t too specific, smaller details (things like hair and clothes color) need to be manually specified during this step.

Finally, the 3D model is turned into a physical miniature figurine using a color 3D printer. From start to finish, each of the sculptures can take 1-2 months to create after the “photo shoot.”
